The Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM) at our client hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia provides emergency care 24-hours a day, seven days a week for over 40,000 patients annually. Consultant-level physicians who are board certified in either adult or pediatric emergency provide service for the Emergency Department. The Nursing personnel are specialized with specific critical care training. Areas of practice include: oncology, cardiology, transplant medicine, neurology, and genetic and metabolic diseases. This highly specialized critical care is unique in its ability to facilitate tertiary care for local and referred patients from the entire Kingdom.

The department has about 20 Consultant/Associates Emergency Medicine doctors on staff. Shifts are a minimum of double coverage, and many shifts (e.g. late morning to late evening shifts) have triple coverage. Permanent physicians work 16 eight-hour shifts per month, and overtime is available. Locum physicians work 18 eight-hour shifts per month.

According to 2005 data:

Prior to offering a permanent (1-2 years) contract, the hospital may invite doctors for a one-month locum. This provides an opportunity to visit the hospital, check out the department, and see Riyadh and Saudi Arabia. This gives you the time to decide if all your critical needs and desires such as geography, income potential, practice style, administrative agendas, and community profile line up with your long-term goals.
